Sustainable Development at niceshops

Be nice! Living Sustainabily

Be nice! This credo dictates all of our business activities. Sustainability plays an important role because we strive to use resources responsibly.

Our carbon footprint an important indicator of sustainable business practices. Our company has been climate-neutral since 2018 and we are very proud to have achieved this goal. Of course, we also try to continuously improve our carbon footprint and take further measures to do so.

Our 3 pillars for climate neutrality

We have developed a sustainability strategy based on the three pillars: prevention, reduction and compensation.

The best CO2 emissions are the ones that are not produced at all, therefore, we strive to reduce our carbon footprint. In situations where CO2 emissions cannot be avoided, we search for ways to contain them.

Past successes of our in-house measures

  • niceshops only use 100% green electricity
  • Our fleet of electric cars, that is continuously being expanded, saves on CO2 emissions
  • Yearly public transports tickets for members of staff and carpooling
  • Installation of a photovoltaic system on the roof of our warehouse
  • Sustainable building construction techniques and high-energy efficiency
  • Heating and cooling using industrial waste heat from neighbouring biogas plants
  • Plastic-free, environmentally friendly shipping materials with glue-free adhesives
  • Conscientious recycling of waste and recyclables
  • Regional and largely organic food available in the canteen

Role-model approach in terms of calculation and compensation

Sustainable business practices are really important to us. Therefore, we work towards setting a good example and actually record all emissions caused, and where possible, collect data. This includes all direct emissions (company buildings, company vehicles) and, as far as possible, indirect emissions (e.g. employee commutes, business trips, waste accumulated, etc.).

Emissions during 2019

In 2019, the niceshops group carbon footprint was equivalent to 852 t of CO2 (calculated according to the Green House Gas Protocol). The emissions are divided into three areas (scopes):

  • Scope 1: all direct emissions from company activities
  • Scope 2: indirect emissions resulting from electricity generated during the production process
  • Scope 3: all other CO2 emissions that take place along the value-added chain (e.g. when using products, disposal, transport)

Conventional calculation methods refer to scope 1, i.e. the emission caused directly by a company, are commonly used to calculate the carbon footprint. However, we have done our best to address all three scopes. The 852 t CO2 equivalent roughly corresponds to the CO2 equivalent of 91 people living in Austria over the same period. The per capita emissions in Austria are at an average of 9.4 t of CO2 equivalent.

Compensation with Helioz

Where emissions that cannot be avoided, we take the opportunity to support eco-social projects that we consider to be very useful and that make a major contribution to reducing overall emissions in the long run. This year, we are pleased to be supporting the Helioz project in Bangladesh.

Fresh, drinking water is not readily available in many regions in Bangladesh. The water needs to be boiled first which brings with it all kinds of downsides:

  • firewood needs to be gathered which leads to deforestation
  • CO2 emissions are expelled when boiling the water
  • women, in particular, need to invest a lot of time gathering wood
  • many people, especially children, experience respiratory problems due to constant smoke present in the house

Helioz joined forces with WADI to develop a low-cost, solar-powered device that safe sterilises contaminated drinking water. Water-borne diseases, such as cholera or polio, can thus be avoided. In addition, Helioz is making an important contribution to achieving the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through these types of projects in Bangladesh and many other countries.

Of course, we have other activities planned for the future that enables us to continually protect our climate and our environment.
